INTERNET NEWS:

QUICKLY MELTING:

According to the BBC, Antarctica is responding eight times more quickly to global warming than it has in the past.  Nasa has funded two new studies since the Larson B ice shelf broke off from Antarctica in 2002.  Now that the glaciers are unhindered by the ice shelf, glaciers fall more quickly into the Weddell Sea.

MORE SOVEREIGNTY CLAIMS:

At the opening of the General Assembly the Argentine President, Nestor Kirshner, called for the re-opening of sovereignty negotiations between the UK and Argentina over the Falkland Islands.  He said that the UN had established through various resolutions and its Committee on Decolonisation that the question of the Falklands constitutes a special colonial situation that should be resolved by by-lateral negotiations between his country and the UK.

British Foreign Secretary and his Argentine counter-part, will meet this week but Jack Straw says that sovereignty over the Falklands is not on the agenda.

FIBS NEWS DIRECT: 22 SEPTEMBER 2004

CONSERVATION BALL:

Visitors to the Jetty Centre will be receiving a complementary glass of wine this week when viewing items for the Falklands Conservation Charity Ball Auction.  Sarah Clement from Falklands Conservation tells us that ticket sales are going well at the moment and over 70 seats have already been reserved for the Ball.  New additions for the auction include 2 felts by Ally Liddle, which were not included in the insert sent out to Farmers this week.  The Jetty Centre is open from 1300 to 1800 for viewing and drinks, including wine, Squash and fresh orange and are courtesy of Falkland Islands Tourism.  People are more than welcome to go along and view the exhibits and there is a box provided for bids but will not be opened until the auction.

DR. DOYLE’S PROGRAMME:

Telecommunications consultant, Chris Doyle, is due to fly from Fox Bay to Goose Green this morning for a meeting in the club organised by Keith Alazia.  He’s due to travel back into Stanley overland this afternoon.  Anyone wishing to meet Mr. Doyle should phone Pete King on 27240.

SUPPORT FOR BENDIGO:

With the Commonwealth Youth Games getting closer, preparations to send four young athletes to Bendigo in Australia later this year are hotting up.  Falklands’ youth are participating in swimming and track events at the games, which take place between the 29th of November and the 4th of December.  Roxanne Morrison, who is currently in the UK, in higher education will be running in the games.  The remaining three, Edward Freer, Hannah Arthur-Almond, and Dion Robertson, will be competing in the swimming events and coached by Pam Freer.  Steve Dent (SD) explained about the sponsorship received so far.

SD:  So far we have received some very generous sponsorship from local companies.  Standard Chartered Bank, Fortuna, and CFL have given us cash sponsorship.  Without their support, the games really couldn’t have gone ahead.  Other companies, such as the FIC, Warrah Design and Energise FI have given us sponsorship towards uniforms.  Warrah Design are designing our uniforms for free and giving a hand producing them.  FIC, as usual are sponsoring the track suits and Energise are sponsoring lots of stuff.  The Chilean company that fixes the swimming pool will be hosting the athletes as they go through Santiago.  They will be in Santiago for two days.

SG:  Steve told us that during their time in Australia the team will also be meeting various media representatives, team managers and putting on a cultural display throughout the countries.  He’s calling the sponsors of gifts for the teams to present to other countries.

SD:  So far we’ve received a limited response and I’ve been hoping for a better response, to be honest.  The idea is to try and promote the country while the Australian media is there.  There are 24 countries going and we’ve got the chance to give them something from the Falklands.  FIC have agreed to give us blue, Capstan Gift Shop type bags.  We want to fill them with various bits and pieces.  The Chamber of Commerce are giving us some leaflets and Fred Clark has agreed to give us 35 fridge magnets.  Key rings and Business information on a sheet of paper would be useful.  What we would like is for the tourism industry to come up with something.  Things need to be fairly light.  The Falklands are really a unique place and we are after things that will sell the Islands.

SG:  Anyone who would like to fill the goody bags can contact him at the Leisure Centre on 27285.

HARBOUR, SHIPPING AND FISHING NEWS:

The Maian Dynika came in on Monday night and is still at the East Jetty.  She’s due to come along FIPASS tomorrow.  Also on Monday night, the tanker, Libra, returned to Berkley Sound.  On Tuesday, the Uruguayan Long Liner, Helena 5 came in with a medical and left again the same day.  The Tsarte sailed from FIPASS, as did the Sierra Nafria.  Today Sierra Nafria came back into Port William to tranship and is currently loading cargo from the Golden Chiqua.  Reefer, Frio Canary entered Berkley Sound this morning and is taking cargo from two Korean Trawlers.  Earlier today, the Playa del Galicia came in to drop off a crew member and sailed again straight away.  CFL Valliant came alongside FIPPASS this morning for a crew change and was due to sail this afternoon.  There are 29 vessels currently fishing in the zone, several finfish vessels have gone to fish on the high seas.  Loligo catches are averaging 12 tonnes, Blue Whiting, 7 tonnes and Hoki 5 tonnes.  Ray catches are still good and average 10 tonnes per ship.
