2005 MARATHON
% Always wanted to do a marathon…Didn’t know where to start?
% Want to make a positive effort to change your sedentary lifestyle?
% Want to lose some weight and feel better but need some motivation?
% Are you a runner who needs some guidance in how to prepare for a marathon?
Does any of this sound like you? Then maybe the SCB 2005 Marathon is for you and we are here to help. The Stanley Leisure Centre is pleased to announce the formation of its first ever Marathon Club.
Our aim is not to run and organise marathons but offer guidance and support to any one who wants to simply give it a go. We have programmes available for runners who have not run before starting at running a 5KM distance and then moving onto progressively longer distances. We also have programmes available for experienced runners who need that little bit more support.
All of these programmes are available on the web but we offer that additional extra, a team to help you. We can arrange training partners, offer fitness testing to monitor progress, nutrition advice and everything else you need to prepare for your first long distance race.
Even if you never compete in a marathon or a long distance race the change in lifestyle that you adopt could be enough to make you fell 100% better, fitter and lose some of those excess pounds that have built up over the years. International research has clearly proven that regular exercise can and does increase your life span and generally make you feel better about yourself.
Interested? What do you have to lose? How much do you have to gain? You have nothing to lose and a whole new life and outlook to gain.
If you want to know more about the club or simply want more information then please contact Steve Dent on 27285 or [email protected].
See you at the start line!

FIBS NEWS DIRECT: 08 SEPTEMBER 2004
UNSPORTSMANLY ACT:
The Falklands Cricket Team are to drop out of the South American Championship, after the Argentine Foreign Ministry put pressure on its hosting team not to play Islanders. Chairman, Roger Diggle (RD), says the Falklands team members agreed with the Chilean organisers ahead of time that they would drop out of the tournament if there was a threat of conflict.
RD: It was quite clear that political pressure was being applied through the Argentine Cricket Association. We knew at the beginning that this would be a potential problem and we felt that the wisest way was to say to the Chileans that we were the smallest Cricketing nation, with the Argentines a large Cricket nation in South America. It would be a huge shame to wreck what could be a very successful Cricket championship with politics. It’s all rather sad that it’s come to this.
SG: The South American Cricket Championship is due to be played in Santiago in December.
PARDAELIS:
Two vessels owned by the Pardaelis fishing company may be seized and auctioned off after a court ruling that the Company owes $165,000.00 to Maritime agent, Ultramar. The Pardaelis and Amerale have spent the last two years in Punta Arenas, after a battle resulting in crew members refusing to leave the vessel. The Captain and Crew abandoned the vessel and have pending law suites with the Pardaelis Fishing Company for alleged unpaid salaries and other benefits. Both vessels are currently situated near Isabel Island, with damaged engines and one is grounded. Registrar, John Rowland, told us today that the Pardaelis Fishing Company, which is locally registered, will be struck off the list of registered companies in October, after local director, Roger Edwards, and Company Secretary, Kevin Kilmartin resigned earlier this year. The remaining Company Directors, who are Portuguese haven’t answered any correspondence from the Registrar General since March. Mr. Rowland told us that there was a provision in the law that a Company is to be removed from the register if this happens. The Paedaelis was Falkland Islands Flagged earlier this year but Customs couldn’t confirm today whether it still is due to Robert King being out of the Islands.
COURT NEWS:
Seven Licensing applications were granted in Court this morning. Two were applications for an off licence, one from Stanley Growers for the Family Shop at MPA and the other for FD Imports. Julie Clarke applied for two extensions, one for Saturday night to raise money for the Stanley Football Club and one for Saturday, 18 September for the Chilean Independence Party. Terry Clifton applied for three extensions, all for birthday parties.
TOURISM NEWS:
Due to increased tourism and the high turn-over of Military personnel within the Islands, MP Travel have taken on two members of staff. Haley and Val came in the the studio on Tuesday to tell us a bit more about what they will be up to during their time here.
Voice 1: As well as getting people out. If they are going to spend 6 months here anyway at the base then they really should go and see the Islands. That’s the main part of it - it’s a bridge between MP Travel and the rest of the Islands.
LH: How will you promote that? How will you get people to take up on the offer?
Voice 2: As Martin did, we use the radio. You hear people complaining a lot about being stuck here at MPA and they don’t seem to realise what they can see. They can’t get out very much so basically, I think the radio is the best medium to do that. The rest of it is up to them. They’ve got to will to do it.
Voice 1: We get them out every Wednesday.
PUBLIC JETTY:
Work is continuing on the security measures on the public jetty. Lee Hazell spoke to Director of Public Works, Manfred Keenleyside (MK) this morning to find out how work was progressing on the secure zone.
MK: Work is progressing steadily to programme. Ian Stewart has made good progress with getting the concrete removed and laying the new panels. The shelters are being shipped. I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t be finished by the next tourist season.
LH: When are the shelters actually going to arrive in the Islands?
MK: They should be arriving in early October.
HARBOUR, FISHING AND SHIPPING NEWS:
On Monday night the Capricorn brought in two medicals before leaving for the fishing grounds and yesterday, the Tamar left Stanley, heading for Bleaker Island. Also, the Insung 207 left Berkley Sound for the fishing ground, leaving the Senturas on her own. There are 34 vessels in the zone, where catches of Loligo have been down in the last few days. Yesterday’s average was just 12 Tonnes. There have been some good catches of Blue Whiting and a number of vessels have been catching up to 30 tonnes and a few vessels have reported some catches of Hoki
