Argentine and Chilean Navies are working together during a four-day exercise in the Beagle Channel.  The exercise is preparatory for patrolling in Antarctic waters this summer.  They will be tasked to keep an eye on pollution and offer assistance during rescue missions.

Representatives of the British - Chilean Chamber of Commerce are to visit the Islands in November.  The organisation is based in Santiago but has connections throughout the country.  They represent around 70 businesses and individuals from Chile and the UK.

COMMITTEE NEWS:

The Housing Committee met at 1330 in the Liberation Room of the Secretariat.

FIBS NEWS DIRECT: 01 September 2004

BECKSIDE FARM:

Falkland Landholdings are advertising overseas for anyone interested in running or buying Beckside Dairy.  FIDC General Manager, Julian Morris, told News Direct they had received local expressions of interest, which are being taken seriously.  But they want to spread the net as wide as possible by advertising in the UK and Australia for someone to take the business on.  He said the recent discovery of Lysteria in milk from the dairy hadn’t held up the process of finding a private owner or manager to take over from FLH.

SOFTWARE FOR FARMERS:

Farmers met at Horseshoe Bay this morning for the first in a series of workshops explaining a new computer software package designed to make their lives easier.  The session started with a brief demonstration of the software, which helps farmers simulate different economic scenarios for farms.  Then there was the chance for everyone to have a go themselves, with Agriculture Department staff lending a hand.  This afternoon, the workshop moved on to Hope Cottage.  Tomorrow the workshop will be held at Kingsford Valley between 1000 and 1200.  Next week the event will move to the West.

COURT NEWS:

Hermina Graham was fined £600.00 today and banned from driving for two years after pleading guilty to being in charge of a vehicle after having consumed alcohol.  A charge of drink driving was dropped by the prosecution.  The Court heard that Mrs. Graham had been at a dining in night at Hillside on Saturday and left the event between 0100 and 0200.  Her husband went for a walk because he felt unwell and Mrs. Graham returned to their accommodation at Hillside to sleep.  She awoke some time later to find her husband hadn’t returned and concerned that he might have slipped into a ditch in the bad weather and went out to look for him.  She drove her vehicle on to Davis Street but then realised that she shouldn’t be driving after drinking and pulled up.  Almost immediately, she saw her husband waving at her from further down the road.  When he arrived at the vehicle, she wound down the window to talk to him but left the engine running for warmth.  Shortly afterwards, at around 0345, Police Officers in a patrol car came by and stopped to talk to the couple.  They carried out a breath test on Mrs. Graham, and a second test taken at the Police Station gave a reading of 114 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of breath.  Richard Marlor for the defence pleaded for leniency, saying Mrs. Graham would certainly lose her job if given a jail sentence and may also lose it as a result of a driving ban.  He added that her judgment had been clouded by concern for her husband and, that having been asleep, she thought it was later than it actually was.  Mrs. Graham then addressed the JPs herself, apologising for her actions.  She added, “I’ve always been brought up to be polite and respectful and I am ashamed that I have broken the law.”  Judy Summers sentencing said that JPs had no choice but to ban her from driving for the offence.  She was also ordered to pay £70.00 Court costs and her licence will be endorsed.

HARBOUR, FISHING, SHIPPING NEWS:

A crew member was medi-vaced off the fishing vessel, Rotterdam Lee around 1100 this morning after being taken ill.  The man was brought into KEMH with suspected acute appendicitis.  The Argos Galicia and the In Sung 66 both left Port William yesterday after arriving on Monday.  Excellent 8 arrived into Berkley Sound yesterday and left the same day and the Bailbeck also left Berkley Sound yesterday.

POLICE NEWS:

Police are investigating a burglary at a home in Stanley on Monday.  The incident occurred around 1830 but Police say they can’t reveal any details about what was taken or whether any damage was done.  They say several people are helping with their inquiries.

Lead story in all Argentine newspapars today is the particularly nasty confrontation yesterday in the Plaza de Mayo between the police and a group of very aggressive pickets.

Pickets have been plaguing Buenos Aires for months now, blocking roads and extorting handouts and the Government has shrunk from using the violent police tactics necessary to stop them. Now that appears to have changed. The pickets burned tyres outside the Ministry of the Economy, stoned the police and overturned barricades to try to reach the Casa Rosada (the Presidential Palace). In addition to their usual trouble-making they were demanding the release of a picket who has been detained for some time . They were beaten back by riot police with, rubber bullets, water cannon and tear gas etc. A hundred arrests were made. This probably marks a change in the Government's attitude towards the pickets, and will be popular as everyone is sick of their trouble making.

There hasn't been anything serious about the Falklands recently. But is something minor to mention. There was an interesting interview in La Nacion last week (August 25th) of the well known conductor and musician Daniel Barenboim, who was born in Argentina in 1942 of Jewish parents but later went to live in Israel.

Barenboim is well known for the so-called West-Eastern Divan Project, which is an orchestra made up of a mixture of young Israeli and Palestinian musicians. The intention is to encourage understanding, reduce tension, etc.

This is the model for an Argentine Government suggestión made public on a couple of occasions that a similar orchestra should be created made up of children from Britain, the Falklands and Argentina as a stepping stone towards these same objectives. It’s a typical piece of sentimental Argentine nonsense, which the Argentine government clearly hopes would lead on to a rapprochement and, of course, sovereignty negotiations.

Barenboim was asked whether the Argentine Government had ever actually made a proposal to him to do this. He didn’t answer this directly, but told La Nacion that he thought the conflict over the Falklands was quite different to the Arab/Israeli conflict. He said the 1982 war was something sad which had caused a lot of useless unhappiness. He said the best thing to do would be to forget that this unfortunate chapter ever took place. He said that he supported help for those affected by the war, but said he didn’t want symbols that would really only perpetúate the problem in the minds of the people, and so make them more difficult to solve. He said that there was no problem of actual understanding between Britain and Argentina as there was between the the Israelis and Palestinians.

Barenboim ended by saying that he would be delighted to go to the Falklands and play there or do something that might be useful for the people. But he said he didn’t support the creation of monuments that would fix the conflict in the minds of the people and so make them more difficult to solve.
