La Nacion carries article this morning reporting Argentine Foreign Minister Rafael Bielsa’s reply to Sir Robin Christopher’s criticisms of Argentina’s policy towards the Falklands that were reported yesterday.

The article is entitled "La Argentina no está siendo jaqueada, se está poniendo de pie" (Argentina is not being checked (or bullied) but is standing up), which are words he used over Radio de la Plata.  Elsewhere in the article he says that Argentina had a policy of genuflexion over many policies the past but that is now left behind.

Bielsa says that Sir Robin Christopher’s remarks are because Argentina would not accept Britain’s proposal for “Open Skies” which he says doesn’t suit Argentina’s national interests.

La Nacion reports that Bielsa will meet Foreign Secretary Jack Straw in New York next month at the UN General Assembly in order to “try to advance towards some solution” over flights to the Falklands.

In other news, another 128 Buenos Aires policemen have been  “retired” in what is the fourth purge of its ranks this year. This brings the total of sacked policemen this year to 805 - usually for corruption or involvement in crime themselves.

ARGENTINE/BRITISH MEETING:

British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw and Argentine Foreign Minister Rafael Bielsa are to meet next year in New York during the United Nations General Assembly.  The Foreign Office requested the meeting and it was immediately approved by Argentina and is set to happen next September.  The Argentine press is seeing this as an opportunity to set on track some of the pending issues of the bilateral agenda, including trying to advance some solution over flights to the Falklands.

POSTMARKS

The Postmarks in the Falklands since the war in 1982 have been the subject of an article in the Gibbons Monthly.  Geoff Moyer goes through each of the issues with the purpose of updating Falkland Islands history with illustrations from his own collection.  Mentioned in the article is the opening of the Mount Pleasant Post Office in November 1984, stating that it was the 4th ever to be opened on the Islands and the first from 73 years.  Others include New Island and Fox Bay.  If anyone wants to look at the article, they can log on to www.gibbons.stamp.monthly.com/story.asp?storycode-1515.

FISH STORY:

A Punta Arenas company involved in Tooth-fishing is demanding a payment of $300,000.00 from the US authority in industry promotion funds.  This payment, it’s alleged, has been due since November 2002.  The cancelling of the incentive funds as part of the Navarino Bill is said to have been decided in November 2004 because the fish was processed onboard the vessel and not in the Punta Arenas plant.  But the attorneys for the company involved have agreed that the company is only demanding subsidy’s for Toothfish since the vessels involved operate in the Chilean EEZ next to Navarino Island and that they process the fish onboard so that it arrives into port in the best condition.

FALKLANDS DARE TO HAVE WEBSITE:

DARE in the Falklands is to be on the WWW.  Sergeant David Roberts (DR) explains:

DR:  All the other DARE organisations have their websites and I thought it would be interesting to put it on the WWW so everybody can see what we are doing.  Thanks to Michael Stevens, who is actually setting up the website for free, and he’s teaching me how to administer the website.  Hopefully we should be going online in the next two weeks or so.  The address will be DARE.co.fk.

LH:  So people can go on and have a look at what’s happening and who has graduated.

DR:  What I hope to do is update it every week so I will take some photographs during the lessons.  If people are interested, they can go on line and have a look.  I am also hoping to set up a discussion group on the DARE website.  If there are any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me and I will get it sorted for you.
