Community School Prize-Giving Report

COMMUNITY SCHOOL PRIZE-GIVING REPORT

By J. Brock (FINN)

Community School Headmaster, Mr. Alan Purvis, welcomed students, teachers, parents and friends to the annual prize-giving ceremony, which marks the end of the school year.   He said:

“I would especially like to welcome His Excellency the Governor Mr. Pearce, who has kindly agreed to give the prizes this year.  It’s also good to see many parents and members of the public here today, giving our students their support and confirming their education is valued in a small community.  This is an important day in our school calendar, giving us the opportunity to publicly celebrate the achievements of our students in all areas.  Awards are not only given for academic excellence and success in sport, it is recognition for students who have worked hard to improve their standards and recognition for students who participate fully in the life of the school.  Academic success may be important, however, a good education consists of much more than this.  And, I am pleased that these aspects of the wider curriculum are also seen to be valued.

There are eight prizes awarded this year.  And, I would like to thank the South Atlantic Medal Association for their generosity in sponsoring what is to be known as the Pilgrim’s Prize.  This prize is intended to be a permanent feature, marking the SAMA’82 Pilgrimage that took place in 2002.  The criteria that had been given in awarding this prize are flexibility, determination and, above all, a sense of humour.  This was what also characterised the troops in 1982.  And, this year’s winner will be announced in due course.

The many cups, trophies and certificates that you see here today represent an important but small part of the achievements of the students of the Community School.  And, we must not forget everything else that happens during the year.  For example, the quality of artwork has again been impressive.  And, students, under the guidance of Mrs. Simpson, have been involved in many projects, including producing posters for an anti-drink driving campaign, requested by the Royal Falkland Islands Police and the Social Services Departments.  Artwork by Christopher Cant and Teslyn Barkman now hangs in the bank as part of their anniversary celebrations.  We are grateful for donations made by Standard Chartered Bank, which has been used to buy equipment for the Art Room.  Music, under the guidance of Shirley Adams-Leach, has also played an important role.  A choir from the Falklands gave an excellent performance at the opening of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference.  And, at a concert in March, they raised about £1700.00 for the Malcolm Sergeant Cancer Care Society.

Students have contributed during the academic year in many other ways, including raising money for charities and good causes. Year 11 students instigated a fundraising campaign and raised over £600,00 for the museum as part of their campaign to save the Jhellum.  As part of our citizenship programme and study, year 10 students learned about the roles of local and international charities and organised fundraising events that took place during the Annual School Fete. On Newspaper Day, their team, once again, produced an excellent entry for the Newspaper Day Competition.  And, have to be congratulated on achieving the award of Distinction.

I believe that the students at the Community School are lucky to work with their teachers in a well-resourced environment, where they are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities, allowing them to achieve their full potential.  It’s clear, by the number of people and organisations sponsoring prizes each year that the community is giving us its support by recognising successes of individual students.”
