On the day, volunteers built a bonfire made up of wooden freight palates and garnished it with a tree branch on top. Meanwhile, three tents were erected. One of them, occupied by the Victory Bar, served up soft drinks, and alcohol. A BBQ was on offer around the second tent and the third was for registration. A great effort was made to cater to all ages and that was evident by the number of children who took part in the swim. Nonetheless, people from all age groups managed to enter the water and get totally wet.

It is not known yet how much money was raised for the Falkland Islands Games Association (FIOGA) and the Seamen’s Mission, or indeed who won the raffle prizes. At the time of this writing, people were still enjoying the day and its superb atmosphere.

FALKLAND ISLANDS GUN CLUB
2004 WINTER SHOTGUN SEASON
Round three of the winter season saw some surprising results once again this week. A very respectable number of shooters turned out for the first DTL scored shoot of the season. Down the Line (DTL) involves standing 17 M from the trap and shooting at a target that is released going away from you. It is one of the most complex and technical shoots offered by the Falklands Gun Club. Birds are scored as 2 points for a first barrel kill and 1 point for a second barrel kill. With some new comers once again this week we decided to run three separate shoots with John Clark, Jon Butler, Graham Didlick and Henry McLeod taking the stands first up. All performed well with Henry dropping some very easy birds first off and never really getting back on top. Jon Butler continued to impress with his newly developed skills and Graham Didlick again did not live up to his old form. Jon Clark came clearly out on top of the first shoot with a score of 28 from 14 kills, not up to his usual standards but a very respectable score. Next up were the novice shooters who took their turn closer to the trap. Some old faces performed well and the new boys most definitely held their own. Wayne Cundall and Al Sutherland came out equal at the last bird and then completed a shoot off. With some ‘pressure’ from his boss Wayne eventually folded and Al came out on top. Next up was Steve Dent shooting on his own after ranging for all other shooters. With the pickers up all ready for a poor score Steve stepped out and dropped the first two birds. From there on in it was all a bit of a blur. With a PB of 19 birds from a possible 25 and a final score of 32, Steve, to the amazement of all, came out as a clear winner on the day. Well done to all who shot.
