TIPHANIE MAY IS MAY QUEEN 2004

By J. Brock (FINN)

Tiphanie May, daughter of Lindsay and Christopher May of Stanley and George Island has been named May Queen for 2004.  Her May Princess was Tamara McCormick.  This year’s Prince Charming was Jon Felton and the Runner-up was Robbie Todd.  Tiphanie looked confident in her strapless lemon-yellow floor-length gown that she ordered over the internet.  It had a beaded bodice and floor-length skirt.  She wore her own silver tiara.  Tamara McCormick looked a treat in her plum coloured floor-length gown.  Both young ladies were chosen from a field of 17 contestants, all very elegantly dressed for the occasion.  Three judges, Miguel Barrientos, Christine Scipio-O’Dean and Fiona Didlick made the difficult choices for May Queen and Princess.

The May Ball is a traditional event dating back to Victorian times, when it celebrated Queen Victoria’s birthday, 24 May.  The day later became known as Empire Day. This year’s May Ball reflected the 20th anniversary of the 1st Falkland Islands Scouts and all that they have done throughout the years.

H. E. the Governor Mr. Howard Pearce crowned both ladies.  Before the real dancing began, he made the following remarks:

“I would like to say a word of congratulations to everybody who has participated tonight.  I think you have all done wonderfully well and I have a special congratulations to the May Princess, the May Queen and to the Prince Charming and Runner-up.  Let me say a word of thanks on behalf of everybody here tonight, for everybody who has organised this event, especially to Phil Middleton and his team, and, for all of you for coming along.  Thank you very much indeed”

Organiser, Phil Middleton thanked all the organisers and those who helped on the door and attended.  Christine Mitchell made the sashes and Marian Purvis crafted the tiaras.  Jan Miller and made up flowers.  Phyllis and Rod Tuckwood held weekly dance classes and provided the music for the May Ball.  Finally, FIODA should be thanked for providing stage support.  It was an excellent evening for all who attended.

CHALLENGE TROPHY

PRESS RELEASE

Monday, 24 May 2004

The first annual Cable and Wireless Challenge Trophy took place on Saturday 22nd May under a very foggy sky.  After some initial minor technical hiccups the day started to go well with teams moving off to take part in the Shotgun Challenge and the Pistol Challenge on Phillips Point Range and Rookery Bay Range respectively.  The FIDF 2 team took first points in the Shotgun Challenge with a total of 60 Points.  The challenge involved teams putting one team member each onto different sporting stands.  The FIDF 1 team took second with 50 points and the RFIP team in third with 40 points.  The pistol challenge was dominated by the FIDF 2 team.  The pistol challenge involved teams running a set distance, loading a Steyr pistol and firing at a standing target.  Scores were assessed using time taken versus total hits.  The FIDF 1 team took second with 50 points and RFIP took third with 40 points.  All then gathered on the Rookery Bay Range to take part in the final challenge for the day, a falling plate shoot, involving another short run and firing 10 rounds each of 7.62 at 20 falling plates.  The FIDF 1 team, obvious favourites, took this challenge easily with 60 points and 27 rounds left over at the completion of the shoot.  The FIDF 2 team took second with 50 points and Hillside team slipped into third with 40 points.

All teams gathered in the Hillside Combined Mess for a presentation evening and social function.  FIDF 2 (AKA FIDF Grunts) took overall first with 170 points, FIDF 1 (AKA Sandy Bottoms) took overall second with 160 points and to the surprise of many the RFIP took third with 110 points.  The team who scored the least points was awarded a very special ‘booby prize’ donated by Steve Dent

The winning FIDF Team consisted of the following team members;

Tom Blake (C), Kevin Ross, Claudio Ross, Dustin Clarke & Mark Bridges

FALKLAND ISLANDS GUN CLUB

2004 WINTER SHOTGUN SEASON

Round two of the Winter season saw some surprising results this week.  The return of the ‘prodigal son’ in Henry Mcleod had him blasting all off the range with a fantastic 46 ex 50 in his first shoot for some time.  It was a doubles week this week and with a beautiful day the turn out was excellent.  Mick Smith once again dominated the proceedings but fell into second place after Henry’s blistering shoot.  Steve Dent returned to old form but lost a couple of easy birds after trapping his hand in the gun! (more worried about bleeding on his new gun than shooting the birds!!).  Darren Adams again showed his natural talent placing equal third with Steve.  Not a great day for Graham Didlick (29) or Dave Stanley (22), both failed to carry on with previous excellent scores.  Newcomer for the week Jon Butler scored a very credible 23 on what is only his third attempt at clays.
