PANGBOURNE:

As I am sure you are aware, we have a beautiful Memorial Chapel at Pangbourne College in Berkshire dedicated to those who died in The Falkland Islands Conflict. Just across the Thames in the little village of Whitchurch -on-Thames we are creating a brick paving maze. Among its many features the maze will have plaques showing the distance and direction from the maze to various parts of the world. I am very keen to include one for the Falkland Islands. If there is any specific part of the Islands you would like me to feature in this plaque, please let  me know. I would really love to visit the Falklands one day since I have been fascinated by them since I was a child.

If you would like to find out what we are up to with our maze, please visit the village website: www.whitchurchonthames.com.

Kindest regards,

Nick Brazil

NEWS DIRECT: 14 MAY 2004

EOD MAN IN TRAINING ACCIDENT:

An investigation has been launched after a member of the JSEOD tram was injured in a training exercise at Yorke Bay.  Sgt Chris Fuller from the Stanley Detachment, was preparing a pyrotechnic charge, when it ignited, causing superficial burns to his hands and face.  Captain Jill Hamlyn from Media Ops at MPA, says that first aid was carried out at the scene before Sgt Fuller was moved to KEMH, where he’s still under observation.  She said that as the incident coincides with the end of Sgt Fuller’s tour in the Islands, he will return to the UK on Tuesday.  Capt. Hamlyn said Sgt Fuller’s wife has been informed of the situation and an officer has been allocated to support and advise her as necessary.

BUDGET WEEK:

The schedule has been announced for budget week, which begins on Monday, 24 May 2004.  General Purposes Committee will meet on that day at 0800 in Gilbert House followed by EXCO at 1400 for urgent business only.  On Tuesday, 25 Standing Finance Committee will meet at 0800 in the Liberation Room, followed by the parade outside the Town Hall at 0900.  Legco opens at 0915 and will include an address by the Governor.  At 1300, the select Committee will meet in the Liberation Room and, on the final day of the budget procedure, Wednesday, the Select Committee will continue at 0800 followed by a mini-EXCO at 1330 and the resumption of Legco at 1415.

REQUEST FOR MEDICAL HELP:

More details have emerged of a request for Medical Help from a fishing vessel, which was made on Wednesday.  Captain Jill Hamlyn at Media Ops now tells us 78Sqdn were ready to make the rescue but were told they didn’t need to because the man’s condition had improved.  Squadron  Leader, Dan Startack, OC 78Sqdn says the ship was first reported as 460 NM from the Falkland Islands – well out of range of the helicopter.  The plan was to strip out as much kit as possible to ensure the Sea King could reach its maximum range – about 250 miles – and then bring it into Stanley, which was closer to the ship, to refuel.  The Search and rescue team would then wait for the ship to motor into the range where recovery could take place.  Not only were two Sea Kings serviceable and ready to respond, but the Chinook Helicopter was also prepared to fly with the Sea Kings if the C-130 wasn’t able to support the mission.  Although the weather wasn’t good, Media Ops say it wasn’t a factor in the decision not to launch.  This was made following a report from the medics, who confirmed the casualty had improved to an extent that a recovery was no longer necessary.  Media Ops say 78Sqdn was ready, willing and able to complete the rescue once the ship was within range but was no longer required to do so.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH CRUISE:

Fisheries scientist, Paul Brickle is flying to Punta Arenas tomorrow to join a research cruise in search of a sub-Antarctic Cod.  He will be onboard the Nathanial B. Palmer for its journey back to Stanley, disembarking before the vessel continues to South Georgia and then onward via Tristan to South Africa.  When she comes into Stanley on the 28th, a group of school pupils from the Conservation Watch Group will be invited onboard to find out the researchers’ work.  Paul (PB) told Sue Gyford this:

PB:  This particular cruise is to look at a group of sub-Antarctic fish called Rock Cod.  The sub-Antarctic ones haven’t been studied as well as the Antarctic ones.  An international group are going from Punta Arenas to the Birdwood Bank, on to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands, Bouvet Island, up to Tristan da Cunha and then the cruise finishes in South Africa.  Unfortunately, I am only on for the first part of the leg because it’s a 60-day cruise and I would be away from the office for quite a while.

I join the vessel on Sunday and sail from Punta Arenas on Monday morning.  A lot of the Scientists, while they are here, will be out collecting fish from around the Islands, on the rocky shore and in different creeks for mullet and that sort of thing.

It’s a big ship and has generated quite a lot of interest.

SG:  And is the journey with a view partly to establish a fishery or is it merely a scientific trial to find out more about this particular species?

PB:  It is purely research.  The idea is to look at how these fish evolved.  They are a bit distant from their Antarctic cousins, although they have similar traits.  Some of them will have antifreeze – glycol-peptides which stop them freezing while they are down on the ice.  And, others, like the Icefish, have no red blood cells, so all their organs are completely white.  And, these are further away from Antarctica and we are looking at how these traits are being evolved out as they move north away from Antarctica.

They are also looking at the phylo-genetics, which is the evolutionary relationship between all of these fish.  It’s a bit like a family tree.

NEW PHARMACIST:

The new Pharmacist, Martin Fisher, began work at KEMH yesterday, wasting no time after his arrival on Wednesday’s Airbus Flight.  Mr. Fisher, who previously worked at Stromness in Orkney, will be followed by his family in due course.  He replaces locum, Prue Hobbs, who provided temporary cover for 5 or 6 months after the departure of the previous Pharmacist.
