FIBS NEWS DIRECT: TUESDAY, 02 MARCH 2004:
HYDROCARBONS:
Nearly 40% of the 3D Seismic Survey has now been completed. And, according to the London Stock Exchange, the first unprocessed lines of data have been received in the UK. They say that the quality of the Data is high and, after processing, should provide a very good basis for interpretation. Once the survey is complete, it’s expected that data processing will take around 4 months. At that time, detailed interpretation can begin. This won’t be available until the end of the year but it’s reported that initial results are encouraging.
WEST CHAMPION JOCKEY:
The sports are well underway and, on the West yesterday, it was race day. There was talk of postponing the races as the track was wet but things finally got underway at midday. Haley Bonner took the title of Champion Jockey and Denise McPhee won the Maiden Plate on Red Hawk and the Governor’s Cup on Tuscany. Today is the turn of the shearers to battle it out in the shed and there are also foot events for the kids.
On the East, It’s race day
ILLEX CATCHES IMPROVING:
Things are starting to pick up in the Illex fishery. Fisheries Operations report that catches have improved slightly and there are now currently 79 vessels fishing in the zone, where catches are pretty good all around.
HARBOUR AND SHIPPING NEWS:
There are 5 reefers and the tanker, Typhoon in Berkley Sound. The Lolligo season opened yesterday and there was one jigger in for licensing this morning.
GERMAN CORRESPONDENT:
German Correspondent, Dr. Wolfgang Lebune (WL) is in the Islands this week gathering material for a documentary on how life in the Islands has evolved since the 1982 War. I caught up with him yesterday to find out why he was so interested in the Islands.
WL: That goes back a long time. I used to work for the BBC in London some 20 years ago in the German Language Service at Bush House, part of the external services set-up. I was on duty at the time of the Falklands War. Then, of course, even in the German Language Service, we did not much else but report on the war. I made up my mind, one day, I am going down there to take a look for myself and see what it’s really like.
LH: So, how long are you here for.
WL: I’m only here for a week. I regret that because I realise how much there is to see and how big the Islands are and how long it takes to get from “A” to “B.” Had I known this before, I would have planned a longer visit.
LH: Where are you going to be visiting while you are here?
WL: I am preparing lengthy documentaries for National Public Radio in Germany. I would like to demonstrate to our listeners how the Islands have evolved and got on ever since the war. People in Germany don’t know very much about the Falkland Islands. Ever since the war, they have just lost interest and I think it’s a story well worth telling. As I can see for myself, you are doing very well for yourselves.
LH: What were you expecting when you came here?
WL: A wind-swept, rainy old place, maybe with a few penguins scattered around. But what I found was a striving, lively community. Stanley seems to be a nice small town where everybody is going about their daily lives and seem to be quite happy.
LH: Where are you going to be visiting in Camp? Have you made plans to go to places like Sea Lion Island?
WL: I have done that already. I have been to pebble Island over the weekend, where I was a guest at the Lodge. So, if Jaqui Jennings is listening in, thank-you very much for looking after me. She also showed me around several of the penguin colonies. We were also blessed with very good weather.
WORKS:
PWD have started work on Ross Road to test deterioration of the carriage way. The work is being carried out on the junction of Ross Road and Reservoir Road, with some further work happening between Reservoir Road and Philomel Street. People are being asked to drive through these areas with consideration and care for the work force. PWD would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.
FOOTBALL TRAINING:
There is to be a Football Training session for the Stanley Squad this Thursday the 4th. Players are asked to be at the pitch at 1730.
