EMERGENCY EXERCISE:
Final planning is underway for next week’s emergency exercise, "Silver Teal," a special operation designed to train KEMH and Military personnel in dealing with a major accident with large numbers of casualties. The exercise will involve a simulated air-crash on Pebble Island with around 100 casualties. KEMH staff will have to bring into use the Parish Hall as an over-flow centre, while working alongside FIDF, the PWD, police, and volunteers from the Red Cross and Corona.
Because of the exercise, there will be no normal surgeries at the hospital next Tuesday, that’s the 9th, but emergency services will be available as normal. Medical staff have asked that people avoid contacting the hospital on routine matters that day, if possible, and they apologise for the inconvenience caused.
COURT NEWS:
An MPA man had a drugs charge dropped against him in Court this morning. But Robert McGhie was fined £150.00 plus £70.00 costs for giving false information to obtain a work permit. The charge for possession of cannabis was dropped. Graham Cripps, for the Crown, said that on grounds of public policy it would not be beneficial to spend the time or money pursuing the case, when the Court had adequate sentencing powers for the remaining charge. But, he added, this decision doesn’t indicate any change in Government Policy towards drugs which remains at zero tolerance. The Court heard that McGhie had received a minor reprimand, known as an admonishment, from the Scottish Court in February Last year But did not realise that this counted as a conviction. He did not therefore declare it when he applied for an extension of his existing work permit. The former Turners employee now faces deportation on Saturday.
MEDIVAC:
A Tourist and his wife were medivaced out of the Islands yesterday evening. The Gentleman had developed a medical problem onboard the crystal symphony, which was in port on Saturday. A KingAir light aircraft landed at Stanley Airport at 1600 yesterday afternoon and left with the couple at 1740 heading for Punta Arenas.

ARGENTINE PILOT:
A plaque has been unveiled this week near Buenos Aires to commemorate a pilot shot down over Pebble Island in May 1982. Hector Volponi was returning from a failed mission in the Falklands when he was intercepted by two Sea Harriers, one of which fired a sidewinder missile. The Argentine Airforce Dagger he was in crashed on First Mount and his remains were later buries in his home town in Mendoza Province. He was the only Argentine Pilot killed in the Islands to be buried in Argentina.
