COURT NEWS:

Michael Dickson was sent to prison for 18 weeks this morning after he broke into the Glue Pot Club after hours, drunk some beer, and then head-butted a Policewoman who tried to arrest him. Also in Court was James Simpson, who went into the Glue Pot with him and also stole a beer. He was charged a total of $870.00 including costs.

The Court heard that the pair had been arrested on the 19th of November after they were discovered in the club around midnight. Dickson fled and was finally apprehended after a struggle. When the pair reached the police station they continued to be uncooperative and verbally abusive to Officers dealing with them. Simpson then urinated against the wall of his prison cell. He pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and resisting arrest. Dickson pleaded guilty to the same two charges and another of assaulting a Police Officer.

Also in Court this morning was Joan Browning, who was fined £150.00 plus costs after she pleaded guilty to serving alcohol to someone who was drunk. Mrs. Browning, former licensee of the Rose, was charged after the death of Arthur Gould who had been drinking at the bar before falling down the steps at his home and later died from head injuries.

And, in a final piece of court news, a trial date was set for the prosecution of Robert McGhie of MPA. He’s pleaded not guilty to possessing cannabis and guilty to a charge of giving false information on his work-permit application. The trial will be held on December the 18th.

INFANT/JUNIOR SCHOOL OPEN DAY:

Youngsters at the Infant-Junior School put on a fantastic show yesterday when they opened up the school for a special open day. The event was timed to coincide with a visit to Stanley of the Cruise Ship, the Norwegian Crown. Lisa Riddel (LR) talks with Primary Teacher, Alison Short (AS).

LR: What exactly was the main aim of the day?

AS: The main aim was to raise funds as well as to raise our profile in the community and invite visitors in from abroad. And, it’s a great experience for children as well.

LR: The children have received quite a few compliments.

AS: Yes, ranging from visitors off the boat saying the waiters and waitresses were better than those on the boat right through to other people coming up and specifically telling me that they thought the children’s manners were impeccable and they are a credit to the community.

SG: Visitors were also waited on by pupils in the café and were able to make a purchase at the souvenir shop.

TUMBLEDOWN RUN:

The youngsters at the Community School have to wait for finer weather before they set out on the Tumbledown Run. The run was scheduled for this morning but PE teachers decided that the cold, wet conditions were not suitable and they put it off until a future date.
