FIDC

The Falkland Islands Development Corporation is to pursue an Argentine company which it says has copied large parts of the website, falklandislands.com. The duplicate by Intertelnet is described by FIDC General Manager, Julian Morris, as brazen in his report to the Board, which meets today. The company claims that Argentina does not recognise internet copyright. And, FIDC is now putting pressure on the site’s designers, who are based in Canada, in a bid to remove the information from the site. The FIDC Board will also hear details of engineering work needed by M/V Tamar. Work started in the first week of October with repairs to the boat thruster which helps it get into jetties and tight spaces. The boat thruster has been leaking oil and a specialist engineer and parts are being flown from Norway to Punta. The work is expected to cost around £30,000.00. The main propeller also needs replacement parts to be made in Norway and shipped to Punta. The board met at 0930

today.

POLICE NEWS:

The Islands have a new batch of potential Police Sergeants after 4 Officers passed tough exams yesterday. Leading Constables Tom Whistler and Gary Webb and Police Constables Suzie Clarke and Sarah Rowland received their certificates from Chief Police Officer, Dave Morris. The exams came at the end of five weeks of intensive study for the Officers, which they squeezed in alongside their normal duties. They will now be eligible to apply for a Sergeant’s Post when Sgt. Jock Elliot (JE) retires next month. He told us more.

JE: The reason for the course itself was that we have to find a replacement Sergeant for myself. Essentially the Police require someone who is up to standard. Basically four students applied for the Sergeants’ Course, which meant that they had to do a lot of pre-course work leading up to the actual five-week course. The five-week course itself was a very intensive study course because they also had their shift duties while they were doing the course. So, that added a lot of pressure to each student. The course itself actually comprised of a crane pack, normal in the United Kingdom. It’s intensive in itself. Added to that, they had the generic phase of local ordinances and statutes of the Falkland Islands. This makes them eligible for promotion. They all have done quite well. I think the emphasis here is teamwork. The students all got together as a team. They studied together in their spare time.

MARATHON MAN:

British explorer Sir Renough Feins has begun his bid to run 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days. He is currently en-route to King George Island in Antarctica, where he plans to run his first marathon on Sunday before flying to Santiago. He said if the weather was bad and there was a white-out it could cause problems because he is on such a tight schedule. Feins, who had an emergency bypass operation just 4 months ago, is to be joined by a man carrying a defibrillator in case of emergencies. He will be raising money for the British Heart Foundation. He hopes to finish up by running the official New York marathon on November the 2nd.

PHILATELIC:

The Philatelic Bureau has announced that the third issue of the Island Series of stamps will be released on Friday. The new island stamps, designed by Tony Chater, can be bought mint or on a first day cover.
