FIBS NEWS DIRECT: WEDNESDAY, 22 OCTOBER 2003
CAPE PEMBROKE:
Cape Pembroke could suffer environmental damage by the number of visitors it attracts according to experts in the Environmental Department. Dr. Andy Douse, Conservation’s Strategy Officer, says plant life at the Cape is in danger from drivers, motor-bikers, cruise ship visitors and others who enjoy visiting it because of its proximity to Stanley. He is recommending, to tomorrow’s Environmental Committee meeting, that a public consultation should be held to see how people feel about restricting use of the Cape. One possibility is to divide off different areas for specific activities. Dr. Douse says a Government Department needs to be identified which will take responsibility for the Cape’s Management. If expensive measures are needed, he suggests funds from Cruise Ship visitors could be used.
DIPLOMATS MEET:
A top British Diplomat met with Argentine Foreign Affairs Deputy Secretary Hugo Tiaanna on Monday. Sir Michael Jay, Permanent Under-secretary at the Foreign Office, met Mr. Tianna to discuss the War Memorial and the De-mining process. The company which is due to put in the most investment for the Memorial has run into trouble with the current Government but the next of kin had been pledged funding by President Nestor Kieshiner and expected building to begin this summer. Both countries said that they were willing to proceed with de-mining but there are not sufficient funds to do the work.
CABLE & WIRELESS:
This evening, FIBS will be hosting a programme that depends on you – the Cable & Wireless phone-in. If you have questions about your telephone, the internet, or anything else about Cable & Wireless’s work in the Islands, call in on 27277 and talk direct on air to the people who really matter – senior Company representatives to answer all your queries. The call-in begins at 1830.
DAMAGED EMBRYOS:
A verbal offer concerning the replacement of damaged embryos has been made to the Department of Agriculture. It is hoped it will be confirmed in writing within the next week. During the recent embryo transfer programme, there was a problem with popping straws, in which 474 embryos were lost. The company that supplied them is now in talks with the DOA. At yesterday’s development board meeting, director of Agriculture, Pete Johnston said that although the offer had been made verbally they were awaiting written confirmation before details were made public.
FIDB BOARD:
A News Direct report on the signed agreement with FIMCO and the Chilean sales agents caused debate at the FIDB yesterday. We had reported that an agreement had been signed after a vote was taken within the Falkland Islands Meat Company working group. Chair of the board, Cllr. Mike Summers, expressed concern that the Board hadn’t been made aware of the agreement being signed. But how did the situation arise in the first place? FIDC General Manager, Julian Morris (JM) tells us more.
JM: It arose out of there being two sets of minutes. The agreement was discussed at a previous board meeting about the principle terms so they could be put in front of the FIDB Board. That was then taken to the FIMCO working Group. They then approved the decision. There were then two sets of minutes of that meeting to go back to the FIDB where they would be signed off. That’s where the confusion lay in there being two sets of minutes.
LH: It’s not signed but an agreement will be returned as soon as possible to the Board. Is that Right?
JM: Yes. That’s correct.
LH: That doesn’t affect the decision at all in any way?
JM: It’s just providing all the information and making sure that everybody has all the information at all times.
PONTOONS:
With the arrival of the first tour ship imminent, pontoons are being put into place. But there has been a change this year, as Tourism Manager, John Fowler (JF), explains.
JF: They are going to be in a different place. The more eagle-eyed amongst us would have spotted some work in between the FIC Jetty and the Public Jetty on the shore there and that’s where the bulk of the passengers are going to come ashore, we hope. We have two Pontoons moored off that point at right angles to the sea shore. The idea of that is that we should be able to fit four tenders – four launches alongside at any one time, which is four times more than we could do at the Public Jetty. The Public Jetty should be there for use if necessary. We are hoping we will be able to increase our capacity to get people on and off launches by five times.
LH: That’s quite a good idea, isn’t it, really?
JF: It is because it’s one of the things that concerns the Captains of these huge ships. Not only passenger safety, getting them ashore in safety but also getting them back on shore quickly if the weather changes. It’s just part of this whole business of trying to give them more confidence to come in here in the first place when the weather is a bit marginal.
LH: When are they actually going to be in place?
JF: We’ve got some chain which has arrived on the Tamar and I was talking to the FIC Launchmen about getting that ashore and getting on with making the mooring arrangements. This project has been a good project anyway. It’s been a co-operative thing between the FIC and Sulivan Shipping and FIDC and FIT and it’s all coming together. Particularly with thanks to Justin East at Any Job, who has driven the whole thing along in the last few weeks.
ATLANTIC CRUSADER:
People who are awaiting goods on the Atlantic Crusader won’t have long before opening up packages. She arrived alongside FIPASS this morning and is now discharging cargo. Tamar FI is also alongside East Jetty. The MOD vessel, St. Brandon, was anchored in the Harbour this morning but has now left along with the Golden Fleece.
FISHERIES NEWS:
There are now 24 vessels in the Zone. Fishery Operations report that the vessels are scattered around the Western part of the Zone and catches are pretty variable. There is only one vessel, the Frio Marathon, in Berkley Sound.
BY-ELECTION:
Voters in the Camp By Election are reminded that if they want to vote in Stanley they can go to a mobile Polling station at Pony’s Pass. The polling station will be open from 1600 on November the 6th but its closing time is yet to be confirmed. The ballot box will be sealed upon leaving Pony’s Pass.
FALKLANDS NANNY:
Unlikely as it sounds, a Falklands veteran’s experiences will be an American Sit Com. Ex Commando, Mark Burnet moved to the States just after the Conflict but found himself desperate for cash and took a job as a Nanny. He ended up looking after 2 little kids for 2 years, much to his own surprise. He told the Hollywood Reporter, "I had gone literally, in a two-week period, from being a trained Military Commando who had just come out of the Falklands War and suddenly, I am changing diapers. And, I am living in the lap of Luxury in Beverly Hills." The show, called "Surviver," has been picked up by Warner Brothers.
