Cancer Support and Awareness Trust: A Different Tea Party

CANCER SUPPORT AND AWARENESS TRUST TEA PARTY WITH A DIFFERENCE

By J. Brock (FINN)

The Cancer support and Awareness Trust held a tea party with a difference at the Parish Hall from 1500 to 1700 on Saturday, 31 May 2003. A music group from the Falkland Islands Community School lead by Music Teacher, Shirley Adams Leach, enhanced the atmosphere. Students played trombone, flute, trumpet, and violin to the delight of the guests.

Well over 100 people came to the party, which featured a raffle with thirty prizes. Among them were two return flights via LanChile to Punta Arenas.

For the two hours people enjoyed the music with tea and a wide assortment of sweet and savoury finger food. At 1600, H. E. the Governor Mr. Howard Pearce arrived with his sword. Before cutting the cake, which was donated by the Military, Governor Pearce said that the Cancer Support and Awareness Trust was a wonderful and very important charity that offered counselling and help to the person suffering from cancer and gave money to the families of those who have treatment. Also, he mentioned the phone cards, which are very useful for keeping in touch with family who are receiving treatment overseas. Governor Pearce went on to say that it was wonderful that the charity was set up and he wanted to express his appreciation to those who organised the tea party and to all those gave prizes, who bought raffle tickets and turned up on the day. He finished by expressing the opinion that the charity would continue to receive report.

Mrs. Alex Saunders, Chair of the Trust, said a great bit thank you to everyone who helped in any way to make the afternoon such a success as well as thanking the Governor for coming to cut the cake.

As H. E. the Governor Mr. Pearce participated in the raffle draw, those present enjoyed the cake while waiting hopefully for their numbers to come up.

The pictures show The cake donated by the Military, Theresa Lang, who is a founder member of the trust as she sells raffle tickets, Neil Hewitt, who lost his mother to cancer, One of Shirley Adams Leach's students, and two students entertaining those who went to the tea party.
