SERVICEMAN’S DEATH LEADS TO INVESTIGATION:

An investigation is being carried out into the death of a serviceman at the Mount Pleasant Complex on Sunday. The Commander British Forces speaks of his regret upon hearing the news and confirms that the man’s next of kin have been informed. MPA Officials say the circumstances aren’t believed to be suspicious but say they are unable to issue further details until the investigation has been carried out.

FORMER COMMAND SECRETARY DIES:

Stuart Herron, who was the Command Secretary at MPA from 1994 to 1999, died on Sunday morning. Whilst here, he was responsible for fostering and maintaining good relations with FIG, local businesses and land owners on behalf of the British Forces here in the Islands. Many people will remember Stuart, wife, Ella and three sons, Stuart, Jamie and Christopher. They loved being in the Islands and wanted to return for another tour. We have the address here at FIBS for anyone who would like to send cards or flowers.

1ST SECRETARY OFF TO MONTSERRAT:

After 6.5 years and three governors, Foreign Office Official, Russ Jarvis, is to leave the Islands on the 19th of July and will take up the post of 1st Secretary to the Caribbean Island of Montserrat. His replacement is Harriet Hall, who worked in the South Atlantic and Antarctic Department in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 1992 to 1994. She also stood in for a few months in Stanley in 1995 before Russ was appointed. She will be arriving in the Islands to take up her post on the 18th of July but will be coming here for a week in June for a familiarisation visit.

FIGO CHANGES:

Two changes are going to be made at the Falkland Islands Government Office in London in July. Jenny Smith is to be appointed as External Development Assistant Programme Officer. She will be involved in extensive travel, representing FIG in Brussels as well as in Stanley and London and will be responsible for accessing European Union Funding. Also, Debbi Ford, who has been based in London for several years, will be returning to the Islands to work as a travel rep for the Falkland Islands Tourist Board. Last year, Debbi played an important part in the SAMA’82 Pilgrimage, accompanying the ex-servicemen on the trip. FIG has also appointed a different firm, Eddlemen, to provide advice on Political affairs in London and Brussels, which the Falklands Account Advisor at Westminster Strategy, Susan Easto, will be joining.

QUID FOR A KID UPDATE:

Last week, elderly members of the community all pooled together to help the youth in another country. They managed to raise a total of £123.00 for the "Give a Quid to an Iraqi Kid" appeal. This money was raised in the form of a raffle and the prize, a giant Easter Egg, was won by Les Whitney. The money has been added to the ever-growing total that now stands at £631.64.

FALKLAND FAMILIES ASSOCIATION AGM:

The Falkland Families Association’s Annual General Meeting is happening this weekend. It’s being held at Wellington Barracks in London on Saturday and will be preceded by a service in the Guards’ Chapel. Those who are going along can then enjoy lunch in the Sergeant’s Mess.
