QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY PARADE GOES OFF WITH A BANG:
The Queen’s birthday parade happened this morning at 1030. Members of the Army, Navy, Airforce and the FIDF, along with Children from the Youth Organisations took part. The Governor, who arrived back in the Islands on Saturday, took the Royal Salute. The Queen, herself, was symbolised by the flying of the Royal Standard through part of the ceremony. The end of the parade was signalled by the 21-gun Salute and a fly-past. This was followed by a reception at Government House for invited guests.
HIGH LEVELS OF AVIAN TB PICKED UP IN CATTLE:
Following on from Friday’s interview with Steve Pointing (SP), we know that the Falklands are striving to be clear from TB but how are the tests carried out?
SP: We inject them with a very small injection of .1 of a ML in the side of their neck with a preparation made up of Bovine TB material and Avian TB material. And, it’s called a comparative test. We inject them on day 1 and 72 hours later, we go back and look at the side of the neck where the injections were given and we look for any reactions at those two sites. And we measure them with little skin callipers. People who have been tested will remember the Heath Test. It’s similar to that. We use the avian as well because a lot of birds have TB and we are not terribly worried about that in wild birds as well as domesticated birds. But it cross-reacts with the bovine TBs so we need to know what kind of TB the animals are reacting to. We measure both lumps and recent tests that I’ve done, we’ve had lots of avian reactions – quite big ones – and that was probably picked up while grazing where Upland Geese have been grazing as well. The infected Upland Geese will cough avian TB on to the pasture and cattle will come and pick that up. That’s not serious from a human health point of view or even a cattle health point of view but it does interfere with the other tests.
AIR LUXOR FLIGHT RUNNING NEARLY 3 HOURS LATE:
At the time of this writing, it was still not known whether the Air Luxor plane had landed.
HARBOUR NEWS:
This morning the Sierra Lara berthed alongside FIPASS and is now transhipping with the Playa da Merin. The James Clark Ross is also alongside. And, the Tamar FI is alongside the East Jetty. There are 6 jiggers, 8 reefers, and 1 tanker in Berkley Sound. And, there are 131 vessels fishing in the zone. Illex catches are reported to be fair with the average catch for the night, 10 MT.
