MAN DRIBBLES FROM MPA TO STANLEY:

Last Saturday one man and his football braved the MPA Road to raise money for a Children’s Blind School in Kabul. Sgt. Welsh from JSPSU dribbled the ball from the MPA pitch to the Stanley pitch and his efforts paid off. He managed to raise £1500.00 for the children. His journey started at 0500 when it was very quiet and with little traffic. But as the day wore on more and more stopped to give him money. He reached Stanley at 1530 and, despite the blisters, went around the pubs and collected another £400.00. He hopes to be able to present the cheque to the school in person and is also planning another fund raiser in July when he intends a mental rather than physical test. That’s to walk from Stanley to MPA blindfolded.

BARONESS THATCHER – A WORK OF ART:

The Thatcher years are the subject of an art exhibition that’s just opened in London’s Blue Gallery. The organiser, artist Tara Howard told BBC Online it was neither an attack or homage to the Baroness but that she was a wonderful, controversial and surprisingly complex subject. Included in the work was the model of a dog standing on a map of the Falklands, which has been painted in the colours of the Sea Harrier. It also has a three-foot statue of Lady Thatcher made from coal dust. One artist has even depicted her as Ronald McDonnald. Unfortunately, though, the real life version was unable to make it to the exhibition because she was with husband, Dennis, in South Africa

CHIEF OF POLICE ON TRIAL CLEAR-WAY ON ROSS ROAD:

The trial clear-way on Ross Road is starting on the 28th of April and will be running through to the 23rd of May. Chief Police Officer, Dave Morris (DM), explains what is going to happen.

DM: This will run from Reservoir Road to Philomel Street from 0800 to 1700 from Monday to Friday. On those days and between those times there will be no parking on the road. We will have officers on the road between the 28th and 29th around about 0800, not to catch people, but to remind them that the cleat-way trial has started and that they shouldn’t park there. This is a trial period so if anyone has any observations during this period, if they send them in to either me at the Police Station or Tony Lancaster at the Environmental Planning Office or Bob Hancox at the PWD then these observations will be taken into consideration when considering whether to continue with the clear-way or not. If anyone would like any clarification on any of these points that I have mentioned here now then if they contact me at the Police Station I would be happy to discuss them with them.

ISLANDS WAY OF LIFE:

The Falkland Islands way of life has been praised by Health and Social Services Director, Norman McGregor Edwards. In an article in SAGA Magazine, entitled "Wish you were there," he talks about the friendliness of the people, saying there is nothing he dislikes about the islands. He also dismisses the view that the weather is terrible, explaining that most people formed their impression during the 1982 war during the worst winter for years, adding that he’s found winters to be cool, clear and calm. The summers are warm with clear, blue skies with strong winds. The air is so clear that sunburn is a problem but it does mean that you can see for miles and the night skies are amazing. SAGA Magazine is one of the UK’s top selling monthly publications and is distributed to about a million subscribers.

DESIGN IN NATURE:

Design in Nature comes to Stanley. Photographs by father and daughter team, Ian and Georgina Strange, will be on show in the New Island House studio on the junction of Snake Hill and Fitzroy Road East. It’s happening on Saturday and Sunday between 1000 and 1700 and then again on Monday between 1400 and 1700. The Ex is being held in the recently built house and, as it has a cork floor, visitors are asked to remove their footwear at the hallway.

HARBOUR NEWS:

There are 133 vessels fishing in the zone and catches are reported to be steady. The Tamar FI is alongside East Jetty and the Earnest Shackleton is alongside FIPASS. In Port William there is one reefer and a trawler. Berkley Sound has four reefers, one jigger and a tanker.
