Falklands: News Direct Minday, 14 April 2003

FIBS NEWS DIRECT: Monday, 14 April 2003

MORRISON (FALKLANDS) CHANGES NAME:

Morrison (Falklands) has changed its name. It was re-named on Friday to AWG Construction Services (Falklands) Limited. Regional Manager, Ken McKenzie says the decision was made by their parent company that a new corporate approach would be adopted regarding the names of companies within the Group. And, that the construction arm of the group is now called AWG. He says the changes are in name only with the registration numbers and addresses of both companies staying the same. All trading responsibilities of Morrison (Falklands) will carry on as before and invoices already submitted will be paid without the need for invoices to be re-submitted. He confirms that staff employment is unaffected by the change and says they’ll continue to give committed service to their customers.

LIVE LINK TO BE USED IN TRIAL:

Live-link is to be used for the third time in 15 months for the trial of Jason Henry, who pleaded not guilty to four charges of indecent assault last week. This morning in court it was decided to use the system to maximise the level of the evidence given by the two complainants. It was also decided that the charge of supplying false information on his work permit will be dealt with after the trial. The trial date was set for next Wednesday afternoon at 1330. Mr. Henry was remanded on conditional bail with the same three conditions attached.

PETER PEPPER PAYS FLYING VISIT:

One of the two co-editors of the Falkland Islands Newsletter, has been visiting the Islands. Peter Pepper (PP), who works mainly on the lay-out of the newsletter was here last week collecting material for the next edition.

PP: For the first time the association has actually sent one of the co-editors here to gather material for the next newsletter. It’s very difficult, frankly, to put together a newsletter in London, 8,000 miles from here. Even with e-mails and so on, it’s very difficult. And, so this time someone has actually been sent and I was actually in Argentina at the time and so it was fairly easy for me to come over.

CG: How much material have you actually managed to collect?

PP: Quite a lot. I have been out to the abattoir to take photos, I have taken photos of the new buildings here, particularly the Infant/Junior School. We weren’t able to cover that properly in the last newsletter and we dedicated that mainly to SAMA’82. In the next newsletter we hope to correct that and give proper coverage to the new Infant/Junior School, also to, for example, to the musical evening that was held at the Community School and we’d also like to carry quite large coverage of education here in the Islands in general.

ANZAC DAY IN THE FALKLANDS:

A dawn service is being planned to commemorate ANZAC Day next Friday. It will be happening at the Memorial Cross below the Cemetery at 0700 of the 25th. An evening meal has been planned at the Malvina House Hotel in the evening, followed by a game of Two-Up in aid of the Stephen Jaffray Memorial Fund. The meal will cost £17.25 a head and anyone interested in going needs to contact Steve Dent.

KIDS CHARITY WORK:

Two youngsters have raised more than £100.00 for the Blue Peter Bike-a-thon Appeal. Twelve year old Glyn McKay and 13 year old Leiv Middleton decided that they wanted to do something towards Leukaemia Research and so they cycled and ran from the Edwards’ house at Fox Bay West to the Jetty at Fox Bay East, nearly 7.5 KM. The two boys collected £110.00 at the Fox Bay Club on Saturday night from residents and visitors.

MILITARY EXERCISE:

The local emergency services are involved in a Military Exercise, Silver Teal which is happening in the Swan Inlet area today. The MOD has said that civilians shouldn’t be affected in any way. This is a theatre level land disaster exercise and is designed to simulate the effects of a soft-skinned vehicle skidding off a main road into a marked minefield, with the scenario being than an explosion has been heard. Staff from the Hospital, Fire Service and Police are all involved.

DARWIN HARBOUR SWEEP DRAW:

A date has been set for the Darwin harbour Sports Association’s Sweep. It’s to take place on Saturday 03 May 2003 at Goose Green in conjunction with the Championship Sheep Dog Trials. You have around 3 weeks to buy tickets and be in with a chance to win the top prize of £1,250.00.

POLICE NEWS:

On Friday at 1545, the Police received a report of a two-vehicle road traffic accident at the junction of St. Mary’s Walk and Reservoir Road. A vehicle was stopped at the junction and another had come down the hill and collided with it. Both vehicles suffered minor damage and the matter is being dealt with via insurance.

On Saturday just before 1630, a report was received that that there was an injured Elephant Seal on Surf Bay towards Hookers Point. This information was relayed to the Vet who then spent the next 45 minutes walking up and down the beach but couldn’t find it. He says that it may have swum back into the sea but asked that people who do spot injured wildlife to be detailed about the whereabouts of the animal or bird.

Later on in the evening, there was a report of an RTA on Philomel Street. It turned out that someone had their foot run over.

There were two disturbances, one inside and the other outside Deanos Bar. The first happened outside when 2 males had to be separated before they went on their way. And, the second happened inside the bar. On arrival, the Police found a man being restrained. The person was then escorted from the premises.

YOUNGSTERS:

And finally, the Leisure Centre and Parish Hall are venues for youngsters to go along to and be amused during the school holidays. The Jelly Tots Club for Babies, Toddlers, and Pre-school Children, is being held at the Sports Hall tomorrow and next Tuesday between 1400 and 1500. And, at the Parish Hall on Thursday, and on the 24th between 1000 and 1130. Organisers say that older brothers and sisters are also welcome to go along for these holiday sessions. The price is just £1.00 for a child or .50p for babies.
