St. Helena Museum Needs a Curator

Vacancy – Curator

Saint Helena’s new museum has begun. Can you help the museum develop to its full potential? An opportunity exists for the position of a permanent curator who will ensure that the museum maintains its new standards and plays a dynamic role in island life.

What does a curator do?

    • Ensure that the museum is providing the best care possible for its collection by developing and maintaining records for the collection and monitoring the Museum’s environment/collection and arranging for conservation as appropriate.
    • Maintain and update the Museum’s high-quality displays; coordinate temporary exhibitions and associated events
    • Oversee the efficient running of the Museum Shop
    • Facilitate the educational use of the Museum by liaising with schools and developing resources for formal and life-long learning
    • Maximize the museum’s contribution to island tourism
    • Train and supervise paid and voluntary staff
    • Assist in the preparation of budgets and in seeking external funding
    • Assist in policy development for the Museum and prepare and present regular reports to the Heritage Society and other key stakeholders

Applicants will:

    • be enthusiastic, imaginative, committed and motivated
    • be knowledgeable about and interested in St. Helena’s heritage and environment
    • be able to work well on their own and as a part of a team
    • have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • have IT skills
    • have experience in formal/informal educational work
    • have a willingness to learn new things

The successful applicant will be employed by and report to the Heritage Society.

The post has been graded as level 6 (£6660/yr) for applicants with GCSE level qualifications and level 7 (£7896/yr) for those with a university degree.

Working hours will be the opening hours of the museum as well as additional hours related to special events and ship visits for a total of 37.5 hours weekly.

The successful candidate will be trained on the island by Sarah E. Holland and may have the opportunity for further training overseas.
