FALKLANDS ABATTOIR EU APPROVED
By J. Brock (FINN)
The Falkland Islands Chief Executive, Dr. Michael Blanch, has announced that the Abattoir at Sand Bay has been certified by the European Union. This means that it now has a licence to export meat to the European Union.
The certification was delayed until there was adequate provision of a temporary cold store. This cold store was approved at a special meeting of the Planning and Building Committee last week. Those temporary facilities will be put into place in December.
At the moment, the abattoir is running on a skeleton staff but that could change as there are advertisements for jobs at the facility.
All going well, meat could be exported to the EU by the end of January next year.
