Deputy Trobo National Party Deputy and three other Parliamentarians, Fitzgerald Cantero Colorado Party Deputy, Daniel Mañana National Party Deputy and Daniel Radio Independent Party Deputy held a press conference at the Malvina House Hotel in Stanley on Thursday, 13 February 2014.
For National Party Deputy Jaime Trobo it was his third visit to the Islands where he is trying to strengthen the links between Uruguay and the Islands. With him at the press conference were three other like-minded parliamentarians. Together they had an intense programme of visiting Government Departments as well as MLAs and attending a Government Briefing. They especially mentioned Educational and Health facilities where stronger links would benefit. They also met with business people at the Chamber of Commerce.
Also on the links list was hydrocarbons exploration as well as exploitation when the time comes and air links as well as tourism and fisheries.
Their gauchos were here first and in the past there was sea links via the RMS Darwin as well as educational and health links and the Parliamentarians were keen to re-establish those links as well as strengthening them.
Their view is that lip service is given to the Argentines when they object to any association with the Falklands but Uruguayan businesses will do what is best for them regardless of pressures put upon them by them.
It was said that Uruguays neighbours would benefit if stronger associations with the Falklands could be established. There was also hope that new elections would bring a better relationship between the Falklands and Argentina.
