Argentina's first ever Secretary for Matters Relating to the Malvinas (Falkland Islands), Daniel Filmus, has taken up his post. This move comes fresh from that of Argentine displeasure over the Prime Ministers Christmas Message to Islanders, meant for local consumption. However, this is not unexpected, as Argentina is constantly trying to find ways to raise the profile of its claims to the Falklands.
The Hon Mr Mike Summers told the Voice of Russia, The Argentine government refuses to discuss any issues about practical cooperation in south-west Atlantic with the government in the Falkland Islands. Having a new secretariat wont change that. Only a change of direction and attitude will change those things.
The Argentine Government refuses to accept the result of the March 2013 referendum, however, a lot of other states, including many in Latin America understand and accept the freely expressed wishes of the Falkland Islands people.
Mr Summers went on to say he felt the Argentine Secretariat was set up to put more resources into promoting their claim to the Falklands.
We are absolutely confident that our legal and moral positions are solid. In this modern world Argentina cant simply come and try to claim a piece of territory. What they essentially want to do is to colonise the Falklands, said Mr Summers.
