Motion for Adjournment: The Hon Mr Ian Hansen (12/13)

IH: Mr Speaker, Honourable members, my Motion for Adjournment (speech) today is also themed around portfolio issues and in particular Central Services (obviously). I would like to apologise to the Department. I still havent had time for a visit. I do apologise for that. Things have been fairly busy.

One of the Departments I did have the opportunity to visit last week was FIGAS. And FIGAS is an absolutely vital service for the Camp because of the Tourist Industry in particular. I believe that the existing staff is doing excellent work. But there is undoubtedly a lack of resource there and thats putting unfair pressure on those who have to maintain a high standard of service. I do really hope that the forthcoming review will be able to address these matters.

I have a couple of other issues that have caused some angst over the last several months, I guess, and probably longer as four years ago the new assembly came in with issues about Sea Trucks and they went out with the same issues unresolved. And now this new Assembly begins with the same problems and this is definitely an unsatisfactory situation and is causing considerable problems now for certain areas of the Camp. But plans and a solution or solutions are in place to address and fix the stability problem of the Sea Truck. Its unfortunate this will probably be a few months work rather than a few weeks. But things are moving on and I do hope that within 3 months tops that we will see the Sea Truck operative. I know thats not a lot of comfort to those who need it now but I think it is probably the best we can do as far as that goes.

The other issue was the fuel situation at Fox Bay, which the Honourable Roger Edwards and I know from the last Assembly seems a whole awful lot of time its not only foolish but probably dangerous to ever start and guarantee anything so I am not going to do that. But I would like to tentatively indicate to those on the West that I am partly confident that we are close to a solution. I know that you would have heard all that before over the last few months but this time I think it has much more substance.

Recently the Honourable Roger Edwards and I were overseas in London to attend a Joint Ministerial Council. I know my Honourable Colleague wishes to speak on that and the OCTA situation so I wont go into any great detail but I believe it was a worthwhile trip. It was a worthwhile few days to speak and engage directly with other Overseas Territories.

I think thats all I have Mr Speaker.

I beg to support the Motion for Adjournment.
