Motion for Adjournment Speech: The Hon Mr Mike Summers 12/13

MS: Mr Speaker, Honourable members (there are) just a couple of issues to touch on. I know that all members of the public will be interested to know the progress we are making in respect of improvements to Health Services in the Falklands because it is a big issue for everybody and I am happy to report that the hospital is now almost up to complement of doctors and by January we will have 5 doctors in place so access to outpatients appoints and the like should be very much improved. We hope therefore that the general population will not continue to take advantage of going to Casualty when they should be using the appropriate appointment system.

There is still a lot to do on primary health care but we have had some interesting discussions with the director of Health Services and the Chief Medical Officer and will be bringing those forward in due course.

I have already cautioned the Director of Health Services that she should start work on facilities for the care for the elderly because Members will be asking for that formally in the New Year and I do believe that she is doing some work on that already.

And just on the subject of Health Services, I am happy to report that Members in the last couple of days in Executive Council and Standing Finance Committee have agreed that the charge for Medical Treatment Overseas can be removed as was widely discussed in the electoral process.

And finally, Mr Speaker, I would just like to bring attention to members of the public that the Commonwealth Games Queens Baton will arrive in the Falklands at the back end of February and a lot of planning is in place to make sure as many members of the public as possible particularly sports clubs and sports people and children in the two schools in Stanley and at Mount Pleasant can take part in the Queens Baton relay around the Falklands. Its a great event a great public event and gives another fantastic opportunity to show our islands to people around the world who are involved in the Commonwealth Games and many who are not. So I would ask everybody to look out for the arrangements for the Queens Baton Relay on the 27th and 28th of February and the 1st of March and look forward to that. It should be a very fun event.

I Support the Motion.
