Nelson Mandela: 18 July 1918 to 5 December 2013

It was with great sadness and sense of loss that South African President Jacob Zuma announced that Nelson Mandela, Father of modern South Africa had passed away peacefully at 2050hrs on Thursday, 05 December 2013. He died at home with his family around him. They reported that he passed peacefully.

Former President Mandela will be given a state funeral and from 06 December 2013 until after the funeral all flags in South Africa will be flown at half-mast. A public Good-by will be held at the venue of the 2010 World Cup and he will lie in State in Pretoria for three days.

Mr Mandela has suffered from a series of lung infections over the past two years and died at home. His wife, Graca Machel, and some of his three children, 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren were with him in his final days.
