An independent investigation report into the Mary Hill Quarry oil spill that occurred in June 2013 has been received by the Falkland Islands Government. The report reviews the circumstances of the spill, and makes recommendations for implementing plans and procedures for dealing with any future onshore oil spills, as well as making recommendations for improving the handling and disposal of waste oil generally. The report will be considered by Executive Council in September 2013, following which it will be made public.
After the spill, Members of the Legislative Assembly felt that the incident was of such a nature that an enquiry should be carried out to investigate the circumstances of the spill. The Chief Executive was asked to draft terms of reference on behalf of MLAs for an enquiry. Phyl Rendell was appointed as an independent Investigation Officer to undertake the enquiry, assisted by Adam Cockwell.
