7.1QUAKE HITS SCOTIA SEA

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake has struck the Scotia Sea in an area located 61.023S and 34.385W at03:41:47hrs (UTC) on Sunday, 20 August 2006.  Set by a location programme, the quake occurred at a depth of 10km.

The Quake occurred 495km WSW of Bristol Island, South Sandwich Islands, 630km SW of Visokoi Island, South Sandwich Island, 680km E of Coronation Island, South Orkney Islands, and 3240km N of the South Pole, Antarctica.

Described as a “M-type=teleseismic moment magnitude (Mw) Version=8 by the US Geological Survey, the quake is not thought to be the type to cause a tsunami.
